Road-Trip Town State  AZ

Phoenix is the desert metropolis at the heart of the Valley of the Sun, fusing several cities into one grid — urban Phoenix, upscale Scottsdale, college-town Tempe, and Mesa. It's very spread out, so a car is essential, but the payoff for road-trippers is real: saguaro-studded mountain preserves inside the city limits, world-class desert gardens and museums, a serious food scene, and (November–April) some of the best winter weather in the country.

The desert is right there — Camelback Mountain's iconic summit hike, the Desert Botanical Garden, and South Mountain's huge preserve. Scottsdale brings Old Town galleries, resorts, and the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, while Taliesin West, the Heard Museum, and the Musical Instrument Museum anchor the culture.

The food leans Sonoran — the Sonoran hot dog, carne asada, and a James Beard-decorated chef scene. Just plan around the heat: summers top 110°F and are genuinely dangerous, so come November–April and hike at dawn.

Know before you go

How do I get around?

A car is essential — the Valley is huge. Valley Metro light rail connects Phoenix, Tempe, and Mesa, and downtown Phoenix and Old Town Scottsdale are walkable once you're there — but Old Town isn't on the light rail, so you'll need a car or rideshare to reach it.

When should I go?

November–April for the glorious mild winter (the peak season). Avoid summer — 110°F+ is genuinely dangerous. Cactus League spring training (February–March) is a marquee draw that books up.

How many days do I need?

Three to five to cover the desert hikes and gardens, the Scottsdale arts and resort scene, the major museums (Taliesin West, Heard, MIM), and at least one nearby day trip.

How do I do the desert hikes safely?

Go at sunrise, carry far more water than you think, and turn back early — trailhead lots fill before dawn in season. In summer, skip exposed summit hikes entirely.

What are the must-see museums and gardens?

Taliesin West and the Desert Botanical Garden top the list — reserve Taliesin West tours ahead, and visit the garden at 8 a.m. opening for cool temps and good light.

Is Scottsdale worth it?

Yes — Old Town's galleries, Western heritage, and dining; the resort-and-spa scene; and the McDowell Sonoran Preserve hiking make it a destination in its own right.
